In this study, we tried to learn more about the goals parents have for their children in sports, and how those goals shape their communication. As researchers have learned more about the connection between goals and communication, they have tried to help parents communicate in ways their children like. So, it is very important to tell your parents what you want to get out of sports! They might think you have different goals than you do, so tell them what you want them to say or not to say. Parents can shout at you as you play, and what your parents say and how they say it can have a big impact on your experience, as well as the experiences of your teammates, other parents, officials, and coaches. The words parents use to achieve these three goals are the main things you hear while you are practicing or playing. So, at your practices and games, parents often try to communicate in ways that create friendships with your coaches and teammates, and with other parents. Sports are a great place to make friends and meet new people-for both you and your parents. Relational goals are the third type of goals. They also want to look good as parents, so they often try to be respectful or sound smart when they are cheering for you and your teammates. Your parents want you to look like you are doing well when you are playing, so sometimes they might say things to make you look successful (by shouting that you are running the wrong way or telling you to pass the ball to the open player). Identity goals are a second type of goals. Outcome goals can include wanting you to play better (by shouting tips and instructions) or trying to help you feel confident (by shouting support and encouragement). First, outcome goals are things your parent wants you to accomplish. Parents try to balance multiple goals while their children participate, and maybe you have experienced some or all of these goals. Researchers have tried to understand parents’ communication by looking at the multiple goals that parents have for their children in sports. A parent’s role is to make sure children have fun and achieve their goals! Remember, youth sports are about the youth. Researchers have started to explore why parents communicate the way they do on the sidelines of their children’s sports, and how communication from parents might affect children while they are playing. Sometimes it can be frustrating for parents because they do not understand what their children’s sports goals are and they may set different goals than their children. Most parents praise, instruct, and offer feedback on their children’s sports performance because they want to see them do well. They normally sign them up for sports and make sure they get to and from their practices and games. Parents are often very involved in their children’s sports. Who got you involved? For most children, it was probably a parent. ![]() Think back to when you first started playing a sport. ![]() Maybe you played in the past and do not anymore. Lots of children play sports in America, and you might be one of them. This will help parents support them and cheer for them while they pursue their goals! Youth Sports Parents So, it is important that, as children grow up and have new goals (for example, “I used to just want to have fun with my friends, but now I really want to win!”), they communicate often with their parents about what they want to accomplish in sports. In fact, researchers have learned that parents often do not cheer for the things their children actually want. However, parents may not be the best at guessing what their children’s goals are. In short, research shows that parents’ goals for their children change as the children themselves change. Parents’ goals also change over time, based on how much their children like sports, how well they do, and the sports setting. Parents of young athletes want their children to develop physically, grow as people, build relationships, and enjoy playing sports. ![]() Let’s thoroughly analyze the lines and their meaning below. Lines three through five, express that the individual is trying to see as far as he can down each road, to help him decide which one he should choose to take. We basically find ourselves observing a very important moment, where he has to make a decision that is evidently difficult for him. ![]() Line two is hasty to display the theme of regret, by revealing that the individual is “sorry” before he even decides which road to take. ‘A Road Not Taken’ opens with strong imagery, because of the diction used to depict two physical roads separating from each other in “a yellow wood.” It is observably a forest that is showcasing the colors of autumn. In hindsight, his regret is everlasting in this case point. The future self will regret first his decision about taking the road less traveled on. This self-realization is pathetic and ironic in itself. The grassy roads and yellow woods represent the present as the individual views from a future perspective. Frost’s take on this is slightly complicated. ‘The Road Not Taken’ actually steers clear of advising on selecting a definitive path. Since humans are free to select as per their will, their fate is unknown to them. Similar forks are representative of everlasting struggle against fate and free will. The archetypal conundrum is the primary attraction of the poem, readers instantly relate to their personal experiences.įorks and woods are used as metaphorical devices relating to decisions and crises. Marrying elements of form and content, arresting artistic phraseology and metaphors, the poem is mostly read without being understood. Robert Frost’s poetic masterpiece is arguably the most infamously misunderstood poem as of yet. The individual concludes on a melancholic note of how different circumstances and outcomes would have been, had it been the “other” path. Since his current path will bring upon separate paths in itself, disallowing any consequent reversal. The individual comforts with a thought about returning, be if his path is unsuitable for him, yet in hindsight, he’s aware of the futility of such thought. In the poem, the individual arrives at a critical juncture in his life, arriving at crossroads at last near “a yellow wood.” As per him, the paths are equally well-traversed and yield anonymous outcomes. ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost describes how the speaker struggles to choose between two roads diverging in the yellowish woods on an autumn morning. A popular, pleasantly misconstrued poem since its release, its simplicity and way with words demonstrate the skill of Frost’s pen. ![]() ![]() It is Robert Frost’s first poem in his book “Mountain Interval” (1916). The popular belief is that Frost meant for this poem to be about hope, success, and defying the odds by choosing a path well, “less traveled by.” On the other hand, if the poem is reviewed, it is quite obvious that it has fairly the opposite connotation. With this poem, Frost has given the world a piece of writing that every individual can relate to, especially when it comes to the concept of choices and opportunities in life.Ī majority of the time, this poem is quoted and used with an interpretation that is not exactly “correct”. ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost is quite a popular poem unfortunately, however, its popularity comes mainly from the simple act of misreading. The biggest challenges are all the things we didn’t think of when we were just excited to put on a music festival. The biggest challenge is just the sheer amount of detail, there is so much involved in hosting a public event, from health and safety to electricity and internet, washroom facilities, ticketing, promotion etc. What have been the biggest challenges that have come up when planning the festival? You are going to be able to smell Cape Breton from where we are at. And its not just music, the cultures of Cape Breton and Ireland are going to well represented, not just in music but in garb, in setting, in workshops, with vendors. They have been hand-picked and we are excited for every act that is coming and can’t wait for the festival goers to see and hear them, these are all performers that we have spoken about, told our friends about and we can’t wait to present them. Is there a certain act that you’re most looking forward to checking out?Īll of them. Then the next step was to make contact to confirm availability and that cut the list further to who we have performing. And then it depends on who is available, everyone we have was on our list, was available, that is the way it worked out.Because it is our first festival, we started with a big list of all the people we would like to have and when we researched who was free and who was already booked, that cut the list in half. We wanted the music to reflect both our culture and our tastes, that is where we started. How did you go about choosing the lineup for the festival? We have to get the ideas and music in place primarily, much of the logistics are handled by our team of dedicated professionals. We want to run it a certain way and we are very passionate about it. Selecting the site, designing the branding, all the marketing, all the planning, selecting the team. What are some of your responsibilities as festival organizers?Īll of them!! We program the festival, we are hands on in every respect. I (Donnell) have always had ideas about how I would do things as a promoter, what artists I would book. Seeing great things in festivals where we were performing made us think about great it would be to bring that culture home. We first had the idea for the festival about ten years ago. When did you decide to start Greenbridge Celtic Folk Festival? Why?
